We've decided camps are special enough they need their own section. So, in the menu on the top right you'll see a new link, camps. Clicking this will bring you to a page full of camps many I'd never heard of before creating this list. I'm still working hard to find and add more, but it's somewhere to start if you're trying to plan out the summer. Some have rolling registrations and some have deadlines coming up and some are filling up. You can use the filters on the left side to filter by organization, the week the camp is being held or an age. It's still a work in progress, but hopefully it'll be somewhat helpful! As always, I'd love to hear any feedback or ideas you have while using it.
There's something comforting about the beginning of the school year and the arrival of fall. Even if you haven't yet entered the school years, fall seems to bring a sense of settling down and settling into a routine. Classes and programs once again begin and around here there are a multitude of program choices for every age, interest and ability. Most programs and classes have just begun and others begin over the next two weeks. I've heard that there are still a few spots open in many programs around the Upper Valley so it's not too late to sign up for that class you'd like to enroll your child into.

Here are some selections that may be of interest to you and your children:
Purple Crayon Productions-fall classes begin this week for the younger children offering various art classes, Music Together, gymnastics and dance.
Fall classes are beginning soon offering programs in art, music, video, drawing and an open studio for teens to drop in.

Area town recreation departments have posted their schedules and their are too many programs to list here. Check out sports, arts, music, special events and much more on your town's website. Many towns open their programs to non-residents as well.

Upper Valley Aquatic Center- their Fall Group Swim Lessons began on September 4th. But you're not too late, the next session starts October 15th! Children's swim lesson registration is going on now, first fall session begins this Saturday, September 18th, registrations are being accepted through tomorrow, September 15th.

Creative Movement School of Dance - Offers Tap, Jazz, and Ballet combination classes, leading up to their performance of the Nutcracker in mid December. They also have early start and gymnastics classes for ages 1.5 to 8 years old. In 7 week sessions throughout the school year.

Some other places to with exciting fall classes:
Upper Valley Music Center
Ava Art Gallery

Local libraries have started their fall programs and story times. Your library is a great resource for more than just books. Many offer passes to local museums and places of interest as well as movies, music, activities for kids and special events.

This list is just a tiny tidbit of what is happening around the Upper Valley.

Imagine being at the top of a hill overlooking mountains upon mountains. It's quiet, peaceful and yet there's enough activity to keep a rowdy bunch of young kids entertained for hours. This place is Windy Ridge Orchard in North Haverhill, New Hampshire.

Windy Ridge is open through October for apple picking, then they open again in late November for Christmas tree cutting. But there's a lot more to do here than pick your own fruit. Kids can play for hours in the large sandpile complete with tonka trucks, large excavators to sit on and dig, buckets and shovels. Playground features include traditional swings, tire horse swings, slides and climbers. Parents can sit on a bench and actually relax while looking after the kids, the entire play area is in view of any bench, rock or picnic table.

The property features hiking trails that follow old logging roads from one end of the farm to the other taking in sights of Black Mountain and beaver ponds or follow the deer path which meanders behind the orchard to the pasture. Smaller adventure trails offer small loops where children can explore walking over a small swamp, a handmade tee-pee and camp fire pit through a fern filled forest.

A trip to the farm wouldn't be complete without visiting the farm animals. Windy Ridge often has chickens, pigs, sheep, donkeys and goats adjacent to the picking fields for you to visit with. Bring some quarters to feed the animals. The goats are quite entertaining as they climb a wooden platform into the trees and look down on you, kids get such a kick out of that stuff.

The Cider House Cafe is open daily from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm serving breakfast til 11:00. Be sure to sample one of their homemade donuts which are available all day, they are delish! For lunch we opted for the McIntosh sandwich, ham and cheese on homemade whole wheat bread, it was outstanding, fresh ingredients and real wholesome food. I think next time we'll go a little earlier in the day so we can try their breakfast. Menus are posted on their website and you'll get hungry just reading it. Treat yourself to fresh homemade ice cream from Robie Farm after picking berries or taking a little hike.

North Haverhill is only about an hour from the heart of the Upper Valley and making a trip to Windy Ridge is well worth it. Lots of entertainment, fresh fruit, scenery, great food and just an all around nice relaxing place to spend the day with family and friends.

Their apple season will open up in mid to late August and as foliage season sets in, be sure to bring your camera to capture prime foliage shots from the high hillside.

If you don't have time to make the trip to Wind Ridge, the Upper Valley is home to few orchards as well.

Poverty Lanes - Open Mondays-Fridays: 9 am – 6 pm and Saturdays-Sundays & Holiday Mondays: 10 am – 5 pm. Good fruit, free tastes of everything they grow or make, free wagon rides on fair weekends, picnic tables all the time, views across the valley, acres of space inside a big fence (kids can run far, but can’t get lost). Local pumpkins, gourds, squash, jams & jellies, but no candy racks, and no pressure.

Riverview - Pick apples, sample donuts, visit the cider press or get lost in the corn maze. An afternoon of fun awaits. Open 10am-5pm daily.

As any parent knows, there just aren't enough hours in the day to get it all done and therefore I have decided that it is time for me to move on from Upper Valley Connections and let someone else take it over. I have enjoyed building and maintaining this site and bringing it to all of you over the past few years for your family's enjoyment.

Amy Nartowicz who helped build this site from the start three years ago will be taking it over very soon to continue bringing you the best that the Upper Valley has to offer for family fun.
