The Holiday season is now in full force and there are plenty of fun things to do here in the Upper Valley. The first on our list is to get out and find our tree. We’ve always liked to cut our own tree and combine it with a hike around the fields, taking our time to find the perfect tree and make it into a family outdoor event to start the season off. Nichols Tree Farm in Lyme offers a huge selection of trees with plenty of room to roam. If you’re looking for added activities to combine with your quest for the perfect tree, you might want to try Christmas Trees of Vermont in Springfield which offers a Christmas shop, wagon rides to the fields, a petting zoo for the kids and complimentary hot chocolate. Windy Ridge Orchards in North Haverhill offers wagon rides to the tree fields, an array of fun with farm animals, a playground (if the snow hasn’t covered it up yet) and gift shop. Red Rock Farm in Chelsea, VT offers hiking trails on logging roads, and a Christmas shop. And if you’re really looking for an adventure, you can trek up into the White Mountain National Forest and cut your own tree after purchasing a permit for $5 through the National Parks Service
. Check out additional details on where to cut your own tree under our Resources page Holiday category. Vital Communities also offers complete details on tree farms throughout the Upper Valley at their site.

There are also plenty of places to purchase a pre-cut tree if that is more your style, Nichols Tree Farm has a traditional spot in West Lebanon next to the Seven Barrel Brewery and if you’re looking for a little more, drive out to Autumn Harvest Farm in Grafton, NH for pre-cut trees and handmade wreaths. They also offer a farm store with local products, open space for the kids to roam around, check out the chickens and geese and a hiking trail for walking or snow shoeing. Grab a backpack, pack a thermos of hot cocoa and enjoy an afternoon scouting for that perfect tree with your family.

Happy Holidays!
