Finally some real snow!!! We are snow buffs, and the more we get, the happier we are about it. For us, snow means lots of winter fun and outdoor recreation. There are a number of places in and around the Upper Valley to go sledding, surely you have great spots in your own backyard, but if you are looking to go some place a little different or to tackle a bigger hill, here are some local favorites-
Occom Pond, Hanover, NH--2 hills, a small and large hill, something for everyone in the family. By the way, the pond is also open for ice skating now.
LaSalette Hill, Enfield, NH--on Route 4A across from the Shaker Museum and next door to LaSalette Shrine--this hill is a big one, perfect for anyone. The smaller tots can find what they need toward the bottom and the bigger kids can start from the top for a long wild ride down the hill!
Mascoma High School Hill, Enfield, NH--on Route 4--the hill is fairly steep, a popular place.
Mt. Tom in Woodstock, VT--provides a nice sunny slope for sledding. Drive north on Route 12, about a 1/2 mile past Billings Farm and Museum you'll see the hill on your left. Parking is available on the right, be careful crossing the street. Sled rentals can be found at Woodstock Sports and Fine Clothing for those that may be in need of a new sled or from out of town.
Snow Tubing @ Arrowhead Recreation Area in Claremont, NH--suitable for the whole family. Ride the tow rope up the 750 foot hill to take a ride in a snow tube all the way down complete with spinning circles. Kids under 5 must be with an adult who will hold the tubes together down the hill. Open weekends, $8/full session (1 hour & 50 minutes) or $5/half session (50 minutes). Consult their website for complete details on hours and snow conditions, www.arrowheadnh.com
Suit up the kids and get outside, enjoy the snow and wish for more!
